A digital footprint refers to the traces and data that individuals leave behind as they interact on digital platforms and the internet. It is also sometimes referred to as a digital shadow or an electronic footprint.

It includes the information and activities they generate while using websites, social media, online services, and electronic devices. This digital trail can be created intentionally or unintentionally and encompasses various types of data, such as personal information, online behaviors, communication patterns, and online transactions.

Digital footprints are relatively permanent in nature and once the data or information posted is public, the owner will have no control on its usage by others. It can have a positive or negative impact and can sometimes be exploited by cyber fraudsters.  Therefore it is essential for users to be knowledgeable about digital footprints with its possible impact and be mindful of usage of digital resources online.
